I was very lucky as I had my dad around for a very long time. I was approaching retirement age and he was 89 when his health finally failed but he remained lively and cheerful until the end. He encouraged us (I have 3 siblings) from an early age to go out and stand up for ourselves in the world. He encouraged us to take up public speaking which has stood me in very good stead. He nurtured us and explained school work to us when we had failed to understand it in school, breaking it down to bite size bits we could digest. He worked for the Inland revenue for most of his life but in later life ran two private schools - His idea for helping and putting back into the community. He also became a much loved local preacher on the Isle of Wight and preached up until about six months before his death. I owe so much to my dad. He was truly inspirational.
Beautiful. I envy your opportunity to have your Dad in your life for so long - my Dad passed when I was 21. You Dad sounds like he was a positive influence on your life - and lots of others! Thank you for sharing.
ReplyDeleteThanks Lori for your kind comment. My dad was a great inspiration to so many people which was reflected in the number of people who attended his service of thanksgiving! It made me very proud xx
